Brunnera macrophylla 'King's Ransom' PPAF, CPBRAF
Brunnera-Heartleaf
This rich new "silver and gold" sport of 'Jack Frost' PP13859 has been projected by some to be equal to or better than its parent and far superior to 'Silver Wings'. It was discovered in a batch of 'Jack Frost' at Terra Nova Nurseries and is being jointly introduced to the trade by Terra Nova and Walters Gardens, Inc.
'King's Ransom' PPAF displays a wide, creamy yellow margin and light cream frosting over the remainder of the silver leaves. After the dainty blue forget-me-not type flowers are produced in spring, the margins lighten to creamy white.
This plant has a slightly smaller habit than 'Jack Frost', making it just the right size to tuck into combination containers.
Brunneras are classic perennials that are treasured for their shade tolerance and lovely blooms. They make a fantastic groundcover when planted en masse, though the variegated forms may be slower growers than the species. Try snipping a few blooms for a spring bouquet!
Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips:
Brunnera is a woodland plant that should be grown in full shade and consistently moist soil in southern regions. In the north, morning sun is acceptable as long as the soil remains moist. They will grow the fastest and strongest in rich soil. Little care is needed once Brunnera is established. Cut back the old foliage in the spring rather than in the fall; it will help to protect the crown during the winter. A winter mulch is also recommended.
